"High the vanes of Shrewsbury gleam Islanded in Severn stream"
Housman, A Shropshire Lad
In the maze of Shrewsbury's medieval streets, amid Housman's steepled vision, Cromwells Hotel, Restaurant and Bar provides hospitality in large measures.
With our lively bar, atmospheric oak-panelled restaurant, buzzing walled patio and quirky bedrooms, we have everything you need under one roof.
Not that Mr. Cromwell would have approved. Under the iron rule of the puritanical Lord Protector, soldiers were ordered to go round the streets and take, by force if necessary, food being cooked for celebration. The smell of a goose being cooked, for instance, could bring trouble, serious trouble... Hence the expression "to cook someone's goose" meaning to bring about rack and ruin.
Fully committed to the pursuit of excellence, our hand-picked team strive to make Cromwells a special place.
Enjoy a fine seasonal cuisine with inspirational dishes based around traditionally-produced local ingredients, mouthwateringly picked at their very best, and an exciting selection of wines from around the world.
Friendly, efficient service in relaxing surroundings... Welcome to Cromwells, an island of fun and indulgence. We hope you enjoy OUR vision of Shrewsbury.... not the Lord Protector's!!
